Major George Alexander Brodie Sutherland of Forse died on Sunday morning July 19, 2009, at the age of 91. Major George was head of the Sutherlands of Forse, and a chieftain of Clan Sutherland. Major George grew up on the Isle of Man. He served in the army from 1936 to 1952, which included both Dunkirk and the D-Day landings, service in the Mediterranean, Normandy, the south of France, Burma and Malaya and Egypt, and as an instructor at the School of Signals at Catterick Camp, Yorkshire. He was Master of the Catterick beagles for several years, a keen cross-country runner and a fairly intrepid horseman. While at Catterick he met Olivia, who was serving with the Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service, and they married in 1949 in Cardiff. At the end of, he retired from the Army and came to live in Sutherland, where he and Olivia set up home at Heathercroft, Backies and where he worked in Health Service Management until he retired in 1981. He and Olivia had three daughters: Louise, Penny and Fiona, and six grandchildren. From his arrival in Sutherland, George was an active crofter. He ran his flock of sheep until he was well into his eighties, always with huge input from Olivia. In 1977 George, the senior member of the Forse branch of the Sutherlands, was a founding member of the reconstituted Clan Sutherland Society in Scotland and its first President. He devoted much time to the work of the Society and had many, many Sutherland friends from all over the world. |
