The Sally Southerland Educational and Charitable Fund (SSECF) was established by the Clan Sutherland Society of North America, Inc. to promote and foster the relationship between Scotland and the United States. The preservation of Scottish traditions, development of ethnic pride and the encouragement of a closer bond between Scots in North America and Scotland are basic goals and ideals of the fund. The primary purpose of the fund is to aid individuals who wish to further their education in studies pertaining to Scottish history, culture, music, genealogy, or any other viable project that will promote Scottish culture in all of its manifestations. The SSECF may also provide charitable aid to individuals who may be in need of assistance due to circumstances beyond their control. Beneficiaries of the fund will usually be members of the Clan Sutherland Society of North America, Inc., however the benefits of the fund will be made equally available, at the discretion of the board of trustees, to any person whose goal or need is compatible with the basic intent of the trust.

CHAS was founded in 1992 by a small group of parents and professionals who understood the needs of children with life limiting conditions and their families. At the time, Scotland had no children's hospice, forcing families to journey south of the border with their sick children to receive the support and practical help that only a children's hospice can offer. Their aim was to provide hospice services in Scotland to children and their families in line with need and demand. Scotland's first children's hospice opened in 1996.
